Ask any Year 7 pupil about the most popular Maths game at St Mark’s Academy and the likely answer would be Owari.

Just before half term, the Maths department invited Yvonne Osafo to demonstrate and teach this ancient African game to members of Year 7. We soon discovered there were one or two star players in our midst!

The game is said to be around 15,000 years old, involves two players who pick up and place pods in cups following, if they’re skilful, a carefully worked out strategy.

Owari is thought to have originated in Ghana and rumours of African men with time on their hands playing the game all day seem well founded following the keen response from Year 7. In fact, some of their enrichment sessions have become Owari clubs!
