KS3 St Mark’s Baccalaureate

This is an internal event planned for the Summer term 2020. It offers students working at a high level across a number of subjects the chance to win awards for extracurricular independent projects.

Students are invited to take part based on:

-High attendance and good behaviour points

-Prior contribution to community or school events

-Excellent attainment and attitude to classroom learning

To celebrate, there will be a graduation party at end of Summer term with parents and students to showcase the work the students have completed.

King’s College – School Newspaper.

Through St Mark’s partnership with King’s College School in Wimbledon, there is a yearlong program run by King’s College Sixth Form students that leads Year 8 pupils from St Mark’s in research into journalism through the creation of a newspaper. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of current affair topics and further develop their literacy skills under the mentorship of older students.

LSE Promoting Potential

LSE’s Promoting Potential scheme aims to stimulate interest in the social sciences as well as encourage excitement and debate, support formal and informal learning and reach new audiences less engaged with higher education.

There are 50 places in 2019 available for African and Caribbean heritage boys in year 8 who are attending a non-selective London state school, and who are expected to achieve at least five A*-B grades at GCSE.

Khalid Iman said of his experience: “At the beginning I was uncomfortable talking to people but slowly I moved out of my comfort zone. One of the highlights for me was the leadership event about finding your voice.

United Kingdom Mathematics Trust

A competition established in 1996 and last academic year over 600,000 pupils from 4,000 schools took part in the three individual challenges, the UK's biggest national maths competitions. Each challenge leads into a follow-on Olympiad round and we run mentoring schemes and summer schools for high performing students as well as training the team of six to represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad. In 2019, 65 students from St Mark’s in Year 8 participated.

The Thinkers’ Project:

The Thinkers’ Project is a new exciting and innovative project aimed at broadening our High Attainers experiences to enable them to compete with other high attaining students around the country.

The Thinkers’ Project consists of workshops and seminars involving Journalism, Oracy, Film & Theatre, Model UN and much more.

MFL Pen Pal Scheme:

Year 7 students are given the opportunity to engage in a pen-pal scheme with Jas de Boufan, Aix En Provence. This enrichment opportunity allows for the reinforcement of cultural links between the UK and France in order to make French lessons more meaningful for our students.

Brilliant Tutoring

In order to support the national catch-up effort caused by school closures, we offer a programme for our High Attaining students to experience small group tutoring with subject expert PhD tutors. Tutoring groups receive 15 hours of tutoring over 15 weeks.
