English - Year 7

English lies at the heart of all subjects. In line with the National Strategy for English, the Year 7 the course aims to develop students’ core Literacy skills: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing to ensure students become effective speakers and listeners, independent reader s and  confident writers.

Main Topics:

Autumn 1: Welcome Project: Inspiring Minds: an autobiographical scheme to encouraging students to introduce, present and express themselves through a variety of mediums in an interactive and creative project.

Autumn 2: Pirates: an intriguing and exciting scheme that will allow students to submerge themselves in the lives and traditions of pirates.

Spring 1 & 2: ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ – students will use this moving story to develop their comprehension, inference and recreative writing skills.

Summer 1: Superheroes – using a range of media platforms –from Moving Image to Printed Matter –students will explore the popularity and success of Superheroes and Supervillians.

Summer 2: Readathon – reading for pleasure – a sponsored reading project to promote, engage and encourage wider reading.

Home Support:

Students will be set one piece of English homework a week. This could take the form of written work, planning and preparation for lessons or research.
